Today we have a guest comic from Alex of 1111 Comics! Let me just say that if you liked the ‘We go forward’ comic, you’ll like pretty much everything he makes. His work is an excellent mix of meaning and humor, if you’re into that sorta thing — and if you’re not, you should be.

We go forward.

Hey peeps,

it’s time for one of those “real talk” post where I turn the chair around and sit on it facing you. You know what I’m talking about right? Like this:

So, over the past month or so, I’ve been talking to Naver about serialization in their upcoming English version of Webtoon, which is their comics thing. This has led to the creation of a spinoff series featuring Shen, mostly oriented around his thoughts when he’s sitting in his blue chair and drinking coffee. It will be updated twice a week, and if you like Owl Turd Comix, you’ll like it — I’ll link to it when Naver starts really publicizing the service, which will be next week.

I was in Collegehumor’s recent Summer Comics Jam, along with my best friend AC Stuart (just don’t tell him I said we’re best friends, he’s not aware of it). I’ve worked with CollegeHumor a bit in the past, but hope to work with them a lot more in the future.

My comics will be appearing regularly on the Daily Dot, so if you’re a frequenter and suddenly get a comic of mine thrown in your face there, don’t be surprised!

In the midst of all this, however, I am also in a huge slump. I’ve been thrown in with a bunch of legitimate cartoonists, and the old muse came around and said “knock knock Shen, what do you know about lines of action? How about color theory? Can you draw things realistically or has your style become a crutch? What about observational humor, has that become a crutch? How do you produce an idea for a comic, and can you do it on demand?”

I am not bad at making comics, but I owe it to you (you specifically, if you are reading this), in exchange for keeping up with what I’m doing, to be as good as I can be. Please bear with me, because I’ll be trying some new stuff behind the scenes in the coming weeks, and it may well get worse before it gets better — but it WILL get better! Hold tight!

Thanks for reading! Here are some sketches of Success:

Success was a character from early Owl Turd Comix (examples here and here) who represented a cooler and more ambitious Shen. He’s heavily inspired by M Dude from Whomp.

Based on real events, loosely.
